Praying for Opportunities at Work
By Lynn Hallimore
Prayer prepares you and the other person for what God is going to do.
For Lynn Hallimore, the key to influencing others for Christ in the workplace is prayer.
"Years ago, l had a friend at work who had many opportunities to share her faith. She told me it always starts with prayer - praying for individuals and asking for opportunities to come. Prayer prepares you, as well as the other person."
Hallimore's approach is one of "gradual sharing" by building redemptive relationships. "I'm not a tract-carrying, Bible-thumping individual. I believe if you show people you care for them, opportunities will come in a natural sense."
Once she was looking for ways to tell a co-worker about the Lord, and learned the friend's sister had just been released from prison. "It was around Easter, and I brought them a box of stuff - pots and pans, sheets and towels - so the sister could get off to a good start. I had hoped this gesture would encourage my friend, Bonnie, to come to church with me, but her sister came instead. Later she brought Bonnie!"
"That's not how I had expected it to happen, but if we pray and align our hearts with what God is doing, it takes the pressure off. Then we just watch Him work."
